Breakin at the office

A couple of days ago my office was broken into. They literally moved a concrete garbadge can out of the way and drove a pickup truck through the front of my office. They tore out a glass door, large glass windows and the security gates. They setoff the alarm which alerted the alarm company and the the police. I also had a security camera which was attached to the ceiling and it was broken due to the percussion of the blast through the windows. The burglars managed to get away with 10 or so laptops, a few desktops and a bunch of other computer parts. It was defintely a smash and grab. It happened at 1:00am in the morning exactly. The camera picked up the time, and then it died from the blast. The police came out very timely, but the burglars had already left the scene of the crime. The police said that this type of crime is usually later in the early morning hours. I am amazed at the lengths at which people will go to steal stuff. I thought I had pretty good security. Metal gates, alarms and cameras. I called the landlord and requested that they put in concrete pilons up front to prevent this in the future. They agreed and will be doing this soon, I hope. Has something like this happened to you? What are your thoughts?

I am leaving the Wallmart over the weekend and this girl walks in front of me in a crosswalk. Granted people do have the right away in crosswalks. The only problem that I see is that she is on her cell phone and she doesn’t even look left or right to see if anyone is coming. She just walked right out in front of my vehicle. You are totally in the right being in a crosswalk, but you will still be dead if you get run over from not looking to see who is coming. I see people in parking lots going way too fast and I see where someone could get hurt. What do you think? Was she right or was she wrong?

While traveling on several planes the other day I noticed something. I noticed that there were several babies on the plane. The mothers and fathers were holding the babies to comfort them. There was some very heavy turbulence on the plane. I was wondering why the children weren’t in special protective child seats during the heavy turbulence. It seems to me that the children are in some danger in the sky as they are in an automobile. If the baby did fall I am sure the parent’s would be the first to sue the airline. If we have laws for autos why don’t we have the same laws for airplanes? What do you think? Someone please explain to me how this works, thanks.

Traveling and the Bad service at the Airport McDonalds

I went to Florida over the weekend and I visited the Dallas Airport on my way to and from Florida. At the Dallas Airport there is a McDonalds restaurant which I figured I would stop into for a quick sandwich before my next plane trip. I walked up to the McDonalds thinking that I would get something to eat. There were 6 people working the counter and they were all chatting up a storm with each other and not paying any attention to any of the people that were walking up to the counter. I walked up to the counter and had eye contact with someone and they just kept chatting with another employee so I walked away and went to eat at TJI Fridays instead. I wasn’t in the mood to confront them on their poor service because I had already driven 200 miles and flown 2 hours from Florida to the airport and I only had 25 minutes to catch my next flight. I have owned a business for 20 years and I can’t believe the utter lack of service. I would fire my staff for being so inattentive. What are your thoughts. Have you been to a McDonalds or a restaurant with bad service?

My wife and I went out to dinner last night and we parked in a parking lot next to the restaurant. The parking lot was 75% empty when we arrived and 75% empty when we left. I parked far out to stay away from everyone and low and behold when I came out there was a huge suv parked so close to my car that I almost had to climb in on the passenger side to get in my car. Is this really necessary? I don’t understand why people have to do that. What do you think?

Let me setup the situation. A customer comes in about a week ago and his computer system is dead. We check in his system and we put in for the notes that the system is dead and that it may have been caused by a faulty fan in the laptop which made the system overheat. We repair the system, replace the fans and the customer picks up the system. The customer calls a week later and says that his system is doing the same thing. I ask him what the same thing is and he says that the internet doesn’t work. I look up his notes to see what was done and I see that we replaced fans and the system is repaired. We didn’t do any service work on his notebook for the internet. I explain this to the gentlemen and he says no, no it came in for the internet. I decided it was in my best interest to just let it go and requested that he bring in the computer so that we could plug it in to our network and see if it would get on the internet. He said great I will be in tomorrow. Well tomorrow rolls around and he never calls or shows up. He probably was able to get on the internet after all. People never cease to amaze me. What do you think?

PS: It is kind of like changing the oil in a car and the customer calls up and asks why their brakes don’t work. And, they swear that you should have worked on their brakes for the $19.99 oil change price that they paid.

I was on the way home last night and the road that I use is dark, and there is no street lights. The time is 8:00 so it is really dark by then. There are oncoming headlights which makes visibility even more difficult and out of no-where there is a bicyclist that is crossing the road, not in a crosswalk. The person has no reflectors, and no lights or anything else that would identify him at night. I swerved to miss the person and managed to avoid him. I am a bicyclist and I understand the problems associated with bicycling. There is no bicycle lanes where this person was cycling. There wasn’t even much of a shoulder on the side of the road. The problem I have is that the guy wasn’t visible hardly at all and he crossed right in front of me at the last second. What do you think?

Pedestrians and parking.

I was backing out of a parking space and I turned around to back out and there was 2 pedestrians behind my truck. They were walking through the parking lot instead of using the sidewalk which was maybe 15 feet away. Luckily I did look and I didn’t run them over. I see so many people not looking while backing up. The two sides to the story are that yes you should always be careful backing up, and the second side to the story is that you should use the sidewalks, or get out of the way of vehicles because even though you may be within your right you are still going to be dead if they back over you. What do you think?

It isn’t the kid’s fault it is the parent’s fault. Parent’s are oblivious to their children’s activities in the store. When I was a kid my parent’s had a much tighter rein on us as kids. They wouldn’t allow this kind of behavior. What do you think? Should this be allowed in the store?

Seagate will not allow a hard drive to be sent back under warranty to Seagate because they sold the hard drive to another company that sold it to me.

Here is a quote from Seagate’s warranty checker page:

The product you identified was sold as a system component. Please contact your place of purchase for service. Seagate sells many drives to direct OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) customers. These products are usually configured for the OEMs only, as components for their systems. You must contact your place of purchase for any warranty support on these drives.

What Seagate is doing is making the company that I bought it from deal with the warranty and making me wait longer to get my hard drive back. They want me to send the hard drive to where I purchased it, and that vendor has to send it back to Seagate. I would bet that this policy really cuts back on warranty returns and it also really upsets customer who won’t buy their products again. I went round and round with Seagate on the phone today to no avail. Does this seem stupid to you or is it just me?
